Federal Hill Fire Damages 6 Homes & Displaces 7

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- An early morning fire in Baltimore City's federal hill neighborhood startled many residents out of bed and out of their homes this morning. Some residents said they heard a boom.

"I woke up to a boom sound and Zoya said mommy is that a gunshot?" said Dorji, a resident.

Then Dorji looked outside.

"I see the smoke like really close and I say Zoya we have to run we have to run there's a fire!"

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 6:30 a.m. at the 1200 block of Battery Avenue. The fire was placed under control in less than an hour but 6 homes were damaged. Over 20 units and 70 firefighters responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported, but at least seven people were displaced.

"It was a lot of fire it could've turned out worse, and you know people's homes being damaged, but we're incredibly fortunate that we didn't have any injuries," said Blair Adams of the Baltimore City Fire Department.
