Cost Of Proposed Frederick Incinerator Rises

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The cost of a proposed trash incinerator near Frederick is rising.

The Frederick News-Post reported Wednesday on figures released by Michael Marschner, the county's special projects manager.

He says the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority, which would own the incinerator, would have to issue about $471 million in revenue bonds to finance it. That's up nearly $6 million from a year ago.

Marschner says the increase reflects probable higher interest rates by July, when the bonds may be sold.

He says Frederick County's share of the projected construction cost has declined more than a million dollars to $225 million.

The project is awaiting approval from the Maryland Department of the Environment. Frederick County officials are also awaiting Carroll County's decision on whether to remain a partner in the project.
