Convicted Attempted Murderer Killed in State Prison

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)-- Maryland State Police are investigating a homicide of an inmate at a state prison in Allegany County Wednesday.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., correctional officers at the North Branch Correctional Institution saw the assault and stabbing of 24-year-old Shane Simms, and he immediately transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland, where he died 12 hours later.

The investigation has led to a suspect, but he has not been charged and has not be identified. Several prison knives have been recovered and has been processed for evidence.

Simms was serving a sentence of 10 years for attempted second degree murder.
