College Weekend Event Stays Calm In Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Ocean City increased security for an influx of college students this weekend, but they say there hasn't been any disorderly conduct that's out of the ordinary.

The Daily Times reports Ocean City put 200 full-time and seasonal staff on the street, as well as officers from Worcester County's sheriff's office and the Maryland State Police.

The town was preparing for a loosely organized event known as College Takeover Beach Week. A similar event last year in Virginia Beach, Virginia, marred by violence, including three shootings.

Ocean City police spokeswoman Lindsay O'Neal says it was worth it to beef up patrols to be prepared if things go wrong.

This weekend brought crowds of new high school graduates. Some college students at the beach didn't know about the College Takeover event.
