C&O Canal Recruits Retired Teachers In Allegany Co.

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- The Chesapeake and Ohio National Historical Park is looking for retired school teachers in Allegany County.

Park officials said Thursday that it's recruiting retired teachers to help the park staff with educational programs.

The project expands educational programs that the park is already offering through Allegany County Public Schools.

For 15 years, fourth-graders have visited the park's western terminus in Cumberland. On those field trips, they tour a replica canal boat and meet the mule team that provides boat rides at the other end of the park in Washington's Georgetown neighborhood.

Park officials say the new program will include science, technology, engineering and math activities.

The canal parallels the Potomac River for nearly 185 miles.
