C&O Canal Extending Launch Boat Rides At Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) — The end of summer doesn't mean the end of boat rides in the C&O Canal at Williamsport.

Managers of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park say the weekend launch boat program will continue through September in honor of the National Park Service centennial.

The one-hour, ranger-led programs are held three times a day. Seating is limited to 12 visitors, so reservations are suggested. The rides are free, but donations are welcome.

The boats travel beneath a restored, steel lift bridge that resumed operations this summer.

Williamsport is near the canal's mid-point. It parallels the Potomac River for nearly 185 miles from the District of Columbia's Georgetown neighborhood to Cumberland in western Maryland.
