City Solicitor Andre Davis To Sue Pharma Companies To Fight Baltimore Opioid Epidemic

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore's acting mayor and city solicitor announced Thursday they are going after pharmaceutical companies to tackle the opioid epidemic in Baltimore.

In a press conference Thursday, they said they are filing a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies.

"The opioid epidemic that is ravaging the country is having a particularly ravaging effect on the people of Baltimore City and its institutions, and on the city itself," City Solicitor Andre Davis said.

In 2019, they said there have been 250 overdoses in Baltimore this year, more than any other Maryland jurisdiction combined.

"We have stepped up, along with our co-council, to bring lawsuits against the big pharmaceutical companies whose reporting shows, without much doubt, have been culpably involved in fostering, dispensing, distributing, encouraging and bribing doctors to excessively prescription, distribute, sell and put on the street these highly addictive narcotics."

The lawsuit will be heard in State Court.
