City Responds To Protests Over Water Shutoffs

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A fight over water bills in Baltimore, with 23,000 city water accounts eligible for turnoff notices.

Protestors gathered outside City Hall, demanding the mayor stop the shutoffs.

Department of Public Works officials responded, saying an account will not be turned off if it is in bankruptcy, a payment agreement has been set up, or if a homeowner has a serious medical condition.

So far, the city has collected more than $1 million from delinquent accounts.
