City Mayor, Fire Officials To Deliver Free Smoke Alarms

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ)—Baltimore City Mayor and fire officials will be sweeping the neighborhood on Saturday to deliver free smoke alarms to those who need them.

This sweep follows a fire that left a young toddler dead on Whitelock Street earlier this week.

Officials say they will canvas communities throughout the city to engage citizens about fire safety and install smoke alarms.

"Each year, our goal is to have zero deaths and it is an achievable goal," said Chief Niles Ford. "While our men and women work very hard, in a fire, the first line of defense in survivability is no the firefighters; rather, it is having a working alarm installed."

Officials say in 2014, 17 individuals lost their lives in a fire down from 20 in 2013,

If you need alarm you can call 311 and a firefighter will respond within two hours to install.

Saturday's event will start at 11:30 a.m. in front of 808 Whitelock Street.
