Cinemark Theatres Bans Big Bags

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Cinemark Theatres announced they will no longer be allowing big bags into the theatre starting Thursday.

The company stated on their website that the ban is on bags larger than 12" x 12" x 6".

The new rule has gotten a lot of attention on social media for being about the snacks but others say they understand why the theater is choosing to change their policy.

"I can understand. There's a lot of thievery going on around the world here," one woman said.

"It will affect us a lot. Because we come out of school and sometimes we come watch movies," Towson student Ali Khan said. "We have our backpacks, we have nowhere to put them. We have to go home."

Almost five years ago, A Cinemark-owned theater in Aurora, Colorado, became the site of a horrific attack that killed 12 and injured 70 more.

And with mass shootings continuing across the country, moviegoers say any inconvenience is worth the peace of mind.

"For me, it's OK. You can always put your things in the car before going in the cinema. But the best thing about is for security also," one person said.

The statements says only medical equipment bags and diaper bags are exceptions. They also still reserve the right to inspect all bags and packages that someone brings in.

The statement says the new policy is in an effort to enhance the safety and security of our guests and employees.

The rule went into effect Thursday.

Cinemark has locations in Towson and Hanover.
