Christmas Eve Mass Helps Parishioners Find True Meaning Of Holiday

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- True Christmas celebration in the hustle and bustle of last minutes holiday shopping. Today observing Christ's birth is how many people in and around Baltimore celebrated Christmas Eve.

Marcus Washington has more.

It's the celebration of Christmas.

"It's just a good time to reflect on God's goodness all during the year with gifts," Veronic Short with NPBC said.

Gifts are part of what so many are looking forward to this of year, but for many, the true meaning or reason for the holiday is never forgotten.

"To celebrate jesus' birth," one child said.

"Giving and spending timed with your family during the holidays," Rayven Short said.

Tonight's service at New Psalmist Baptist Church is just one of many places of worship in Maryland and around the world that is celebrating the Holiday with honoring Christ.

"With all that has been happening across our country, the various issues that have been raised, the tensions that do exist, I think today reminds us that God is letting us know there is hope," Bishop Walter Thomas.

From Christmas Eve service at New Psalmist Baptist Church to morning mass at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

Different location, different denomination, but the meaning is the same.

"To celebrate Jesus," Cameron Cole said.

"It's more spiritual because it is very religious oriented in our culture to give thanks," Yolopattli Hernandez said.

"It's one time of the year that everybody has a common reason to be good to each other," Paul Cain said. "That's why it's important."

Cathedral Mary Our Queen also held a 10 p.m. mass tonight.

Christmas Mass is Thursday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
