Christians Around Md. Celebrating Christmas

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- People are coming together to remember the birth of Christ. The celebration of Christmas goes way beyond the stockings and the gifts.

Tracey Leong has details on the tradition.

After gathering under the Christmas tree, people across Maryland took part in another holiday tradition--attending Christmas service.

Celebrating Christmas through music and prayers, friends and loved ones filled the Baltimore Basilica pews.

"It is a day of hope and a day of joy," said Baltimore Archbishop William Lori.

And a day to remember the real reason for Christmas.

"When baby Jesus is born," said five-year-old Shelby.

"This child came into the world to make us extremely happy," said Archbishop Lori.

The archbishop recently met with Pope Francis to discuss his hopes for Baltimore.

"I asked him to pray for us, to pray the healing of our divisions, for an end to racial tensions and that we might all come together," said Lori.

And across the city at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Baltimore, there were people young and old.

"Celebrate Christmas," said six-year-old Alexander.

Spreading the Christmas spirit.

"Peace on Earth and good will towards, not just Christians, but Muslims and Jews and people of no faith at all," said Pastor Frank Reid, III, Bethel A.M.E.

A tradition connecting all generations.

"It lets us know that we're all under one creator, we're all the same, there's no difference," said Tanya Green Deshieods.

And a call for people to unite and help those in need.

"Peace within becomes peace in the city," said Pastor Reid.

A holiday wish with a timeless message.

'Tis the season to be giving. This is a critical time for churches when they collect donations for the needy.

Many churches are collecting coats for those in need to prepare for the colder months.
