Chief Names Suspect In Baltimore Police Shooting

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Police have identified a suspect in the shooting that left an off-duty Baltimore police officer in critical condition.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts identified the suspect Saturday night as 34-year-old Gregg Thomas. A search is underway to locate Thomas.

Police say the shooting happened Friday evening on Bel Air Road. Batts identified the injured officer as Sgt. Keith Mcneill, a 19-year veteran of the department. Police say Mcneill was shot while doing personal errands. He was shot multiple times in his upper body.

Batts says doctors are "cautiously optimistic" about Mcneill's recovery after he underwent several surgeries.

Investigators have pursued several search warrants throughout the city in the hunt for Thomas. Batts says anyone found aiding or hiding the suspect will be held accountable.
