Carroll County Awards Contract To Plan Airport Expansion

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- An expansion of the Carroll County Regional Airport is now a step closer to reality with the awarding of a contract for planning the project.

The Carroll County Times (http://bit.ly/1LWIjKp ) reports that the County Board of Commissioners voted 3-1 Thursday to hire Charlotte, North Carolina-based Delta Airport Consultants for planning, design and engineering work on the project.

Joe McKelvey, the manager of the airport, says the company has been hired for past airport projects. It also received the highest ranking out of the five companies who bid on the project, as judged by a three-person airport committee.

Construction of a new runway, which is set to begin in 2020, is expected to cost about $78 million, with 90 percent of the project being paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration.
