VIDEO: Car Veers Off Road, Hits Gas Pump, Flips

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Stunning video was captured as a car came tearing off a Baltimore County road and hit a gas pump in Parkville Monday morning.

Police are still investigating how the 64-year-old driver, who was seriously injured in the crash, lost control.

The video shows headlights coming down the road just before 5 a.m. Six seconds later, they vanish behind a cloud of smoke created from the impact.

You can see the gas station's awning shake, and the car goes completely perpendicular from the ground and then landing on the hood.

Employees at the Carroll Fuel Gas Station on Putty Hill Road shared the video with WJZ.

We showed it to stunned customers.

"Thank goodness they're alive, and they didn't explode," says Alexander Shaw.

Neighbor Kayla McCardell says both she and the driver are lucky the safety valves on the pump kicked in and prevented that.

"I actually live on the next street over, so I probably would have heard it," she says.

Baltimore County Police say the driver was alone in the car, and is now fighting for his life. They say alcohol was not a factor in the crash and the driver is not facing any charges.

Now cleanup begins at the station, where the battered pump must be replaced and all kinds of debris needs clearing.
