Car Hits Gas Meter In Bethesda, Forces Apartment Evacuation

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County fire officials say a car struck a gas meter in Bethesda, Maryland, forcing residents of an apartment complex to evacuate the building.

Authorities say the driver crashed into a commercial-grade gas meter attached to the apartment complex early Sunday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue service spokesman Pete Piringer says several buildings and dozens of residents were evacuated after the crash caused a significant leak. Piringer says residents were taken to a nearby supermarket while fire crews and the gas company shut off gas.

The apartment building and surround areas were reopened about two hours later.

Additional details about the driver who struck the gas meter have not been provided.
