Police Say Driver In Pursuit May Be Linked To Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A bizarre string of events in downtown Baltimore Friday.

A driver flees from police, down JFX during the busy hour, then crashed into barriers outside city police headquarters.

Rick Ritter has more on how it all unfolded.

The car crashed right here into a set of barricades at the busiest time of the day, but police believe it all started with a shootout in North Baltimore.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 hovers overs the crash that unfolded during the height of rush hour, when a police pursuit in North Baltimore took a wild stretch downtown.

The first call came in around 5 p.m. of shots fired in the 3800 block of Cold Spring Lane send a 33-year-old man to the hospital.

But it's a black Acura nearby that grabs the attention of police.

"They saw something was wrong with this vehicle, it didn't seem right," said Jeremy Silbert, of the Baltimore City Police. "They observed the vehicle strike another vehicle."

Police say they pursued the Acura onto 83, towards downtown, as it continued to drive erratically and strike other cars.

Before ending with a bizarre crash into city police headquarters along East Fayette Street.

Inside the car is a woman, who police believe may be connected to the shooting.

WJZ was there when she was taken into custody.

Tense moments, ending in a dramatic fashion that could've easily been deadly.

"Had there been pedestrians outs, this really could have been a horrible situation," said Silbert.

Both the 33-year-old who was shot and the female driver suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Police say they are holding the driver for questioning, but aren't calling her a suspect at this time.

Detectives are still looking for witnesses to the shooting.
