Candidates Work To Convince Voters To Opt For Them

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- We're eight days from Election Day and the candidates are on the stump. Marylanders have until Thursday to take advantage of early voting before the November 4 general election.

Pat Warren was on the campaign trail.

Eight days may seem like a short time but it's still a long way to go in the race for Maryland's governor.

It's lunchtime and, as the steady stream of voters slows to a trickle in some early voting centers, the candidates are on a mission.

"We're working incredibly hard, running to the finish line. Eight days and we ask everyone to get out and vote," said Ken Ulman, who's running for Lt. Governor.

"It's getting the message out but also being out like today in Baltimore City and meeting as many people as possible," said Boyd Rutherford.

The State Board of Elections reports approximately 118,000 Marylanders have cast ballots since early voting started Thursday.

The governor's race has become a national focus for the Democrat and Republican parties and it's boots on the ground for Lt. Governor candidates, Republican Larry Hogan's running mate Boyd Rutherford and Democrat Anthony Brown's running mate Ken Ulman.

"A lot of shoe leather, a lot of handshaking, taking the time to talk to people about the challenges they're having and what they'd like to see different," Rutherford said.

"Maryland is not Texas or Wisconsin or Pennsylvania or any state that's making it harder for people to vote. Maryland makes it more convenient and so we're asking everyone to take advantage of early voting, no matter who you're voting for. I clearly have a strong preference," Ulman said.

Polls open at 10 and stay open until 8, now through Thursday.

The State Board of Elections tallies the number of early voters at the end of each day.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will campaign for Larry Hogan Tuesday and Hillary Clinton will campaign for Anthony Brown this week.
