California University Blasts Maryland School's Lawsuit
EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- A California university says that a recent trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland has no merit.
The Frederick News-Post reports that administrators at Mount Saint Mary's University in Los Angeles said in a statement on Tuesday that they never required permission from the Maryland school to change its name from "college" to "university." Even so, Debbie Ream, director of communications and marketing at the California school, says Maryland administrators did indeed give the go-ahead.
The Maryland school filed a lawsuit in June over the January name change, which the plaintiffs say is causing confusion for prospective students and taking advantage of the Maryland school's reputation.
Administrators in California say the title was changed to reflect the school's enrollment and the depth of its degree programs.
