BWI Airport Celebrates Nine Straight Months Of Breaking Records

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- For the ninth straight month, BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport has seen a record number of travelers.

More than 2 million passengers flew through this past March -- a nine percent jump from the same time last year.

That has helped BWI set a new record high for its first quarter, with 5.3 million passengers.

"People are price conscious, BWI becomes an attractive alternative for them," says Ricky Smith, CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration. "We are also an easy airport to use."

In addition to low fares and convenient access, the airport is providing more options. More airlines and destinations were recently added.

"We do anticipate the growth to go on for many more months as long as the economy holds up," Smith says.

BWI is also currently building a larger security check in area that will be able to accommodate more passengers. That will open this fall.
