Bus Driver Transporting Maryland Students Facing DUI Charge

TRAPPE, Md. (AP) -- A commercial Delaware bus driver transporting a group of Maryland middle school students back from a field trip has been accused of driving under the influence.

Maryland State Police said in a statement that 45-year-old Joseph R. Johnson of Dover, Delaware has been arrested on a DUI charge after driving a bus Wednesday evening that was reported by another driver to have been weaving on the road.

According to police, adults on board the bus insisted that Johnson pull over and wait for troopers to arrive.

The charter bus, owned by Dawson Tour Bus Services, Inc., of Camden, Delaware, stopped on Route 50, in Maryland's Talbot County.

Wicomico County Public Schools spokeswoman Tracy Sahler said in a statement that the 33 students from Salisbury's Bennett Middle School on board the bus were safe.

It's unclear whether Johnson has an attorney.
