Bump At The Pump: Gas Tax Increases

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- If you've pumped some gas today, you may have noticed a slight price increase. It's all because of a change in a state law that ups the gas tax by three cents.

Ron Matz reports on why it's costing a little more to fill 'er up.

At the pump, motorists are seeing a slight bump in the cost of gas.

"I notice that gas prices keep going up," motorist Terry Morgan said.

Going up three cents a gallon as of today thanks to an increase in the state gasoline tax.

"It is what it is ya know... we should just be happy that at least it's not $4 a gallon anymore so ya know a little blessing," motorist Dave Sandles said.

The revenues raised are designed to improve Maryland's roads and bridges.

"We know the gas tax revenues are projected to bring in about $4.6 billion for transportation related projects over the next six years to help with the upkeep and maintenance of our roads and bridges so we certainly know the money is needed," Ragina Cooper-Averella with AAA Mid-Atlantic said.

At the Carroll Independent Station on Falls Road today, the price actually dropped as the station tries to stay ahead of the competition.

"Like one mile away from here it's like $2.70 so it's cheaper and that's why we come here," motoroist Anirubha Singh said.

Despite the slight bump, Baltimore area gas prices remain about a dollar a gallon less than they were at this time a year ago.

"It's excellent," motorist Rev. Beverly Carter said. "It gives you an opportunity to save one place and spend someplace else."

Up until today, gas prices in the Baltimore area had dropped for 96 days in a row.

The gas price average in Maryland is $2.42 as of Thursday. It was $3.46 one year ago.
