Breaking Down The Million Dollar Powerball Odds

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--You live to play another day because there were no winners in last night's Powerball.

Ava-joye Burnett has more on your odds of striking it big.

It's not hard to be America's favorite game when the Powerball jackpot soars to more than $700 million. Lottery officials say it's the largest jackpot ever!

"Everybody is talking about this on the street and in their offices. I think they are getting together, pooling their money, sending somebody out to lunch time to buy these tickets," said Gordon Medenica, Director of the Maryland.

So what are you chances of winning the grand prize? 1 in 292 million!

But officials say it gets a little bit easier to win a millions bucks, with 1 in almost 12 million.

Looking to bring home a $50,000 prize? Only 1 in 900,000.

It wouldn't be the first time someone's won big in Maryland.

Remember the three amigos--teachers who won the Mega Millions in 2012.

Now even if you don't win that more than half a billion dollar prize you can still walk away pretty happy. Last night, more than 10 people won a million bucks.

Officials say 70 to 80 percent of the big winners made the machine choose their numbers.

If you hit the $700 million jackpot the cash pay out is 428 million before taxes.
