Bowie Student Dies While On ROTC Trip

BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- A 16-year-old Maryland boy has died after he stopped breathing while returning from a bus trip with fellow classmates to South Carolina.

Prince George's County Public Schools confirms that Okon Ntekem died Saturday morning on the way back from a Junior ROTC trip to Parris Island, South Carolina, where the students visited a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting station.

Prince George's County Fire spokesman Mark Brady says the teen stopped breathing at some point, and that the bus pulled off the Capital Beltway in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

CPR was in progress when paramedics arrived, and the teen was taken to a nearby hospital. Brady says he was pronounced dead within the hour. An autopsy will determine what caused Ntekem's death.

Ntekem was a student at Bowie High School.
