Bone-Chilling Temperatures Could Kill Off Garden Pests

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Icy temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic region could bring good news for gardeners.

University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp tells WTOP-AM (http://bit.ly/1CTX3DQ ) that if the frost gets beyond 6 inches in the ground, the ice will kill pests like ear worms, flea beetles and stink bugs.

The longer the cold stays, the more bugs will die.

Raupp also says some bugs living in warm spots, such as attics, may have been fooled into coming out by a handful of spring-like days in early February. He says those early risers will find it difficult to survive in the current blast of arctic air.
