Bob Haynie: Will Davis Suspension Derail Orioles?

MLB announced today that Orioles 1B/3B Chris Davis has been suspended without pay for 25 games for testing positive for amphetamines. Of course, that is a violation of baseball's drug program.

Davis said in a statement that he was taking Adderall without clearance from Major League Baseball.

In a week of explosive sports news coming out of Baltimore, this is the latest bombshell.

For the Birds, this is tough because they are already minus some key pieces to a team that is getting closer and closer to winning the AL East for the first time since 1997.

Catcher Matt Wieters has been out since May after undergoing Tommy John surgery. On top of that, 3B Manny Machado is done for the year after having surgery on his right knee.

The Orioles are in the midst of a 10-game home stand in which they play the Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox. They could very well clinch their division during that time.

Barring a complete collapse, the Baltimore Orioles are going to the playoffs.

Can they, however, survive this latest setback and make a run deep into October?

It is not impossible to think so. This is a scrappy bunch.

Once again, their resilience will be tested.
