Bob Haynie: Orioles Use The Power For A Win In Florida
After dropping two games in a row, the Baltimore Orioles needed to get themselves a win against the Tampa Bay Rays. By breaking out the home run bats, the Birds got exactly what they needed at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night.
Slumping 1B Chris Davis laced a grand slam off the left-field foul pole and DH Steve Pearce added a two-run shot as the Orioles beat the Rays 7-5. With the victory, the Orioles improved 6-1 against Tampa Bay in 2014.
The power display made a winner of RHP Miguel Gonzalez. It wasn't what you would call a quality start, but Gonzalez did enough to get the decision. He allowed four runs in five innings in his first start off the DL.
The seven runs scored by the Orioles were the most they have put on the board since June 3rd in Texas. Baltimore continues to score runs on the road, as well. They average over five runs per game away from Camden Yards.
With the two HR's, the Birds have now gone deep 23 times in the month of June. That total leads the majors. Since May 20, they have hit 41 HR's. That total is also tops in all of baseball.
Yes, you would like to see the Orioles become more versatile when it comes to scoring runs. However, you have to admit it is fun to watch them bash away when they get hot.
The Orioles have scored 11 runs in their last two games. Hopefully, we will see this type of production continue for a while.
