Board Of Public Works Approves Tire Dump Cleanup
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Board of Public Works has approved funding to remove up to 200,000 tires from a dump in Crownsville.
The board on Wednesday approved $2.5 million to pay for the cleanup, which will allow more than 37 acres to be placed in a conservation easement.
The board first approved the cleanup in 2003. Troubles getting permits and the deaths of the property's previous owners contributed to the delay.
The Capital of Annapolis reports that Maryland Environmental Service will conduct the cleanup. It is hoped the project will begin in the spring of 2015.
As many as 5 million tires may be in three ravines on the 203-acre property.
