Board Approves $35M For Sewage Treatment Plants
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's Board of Public Works has approved $35 million in funding to upgrade sewage treatment plants and septic systems.
The board approved the funding Wednesday.
The biggest part will be used to help pay for upgrades at the Northeast River Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Cecil County. After the upgrades, state officials say the facility will reduce its nitrogen discharge by 62.5 percent to the Northeast River and the Chesapeake Bay. Excessive nitrogen discharge leads to lowered levels of oxygen needed to support aquatic life.
Nearly $32 million of the funding approved Wednesday will go to upgrading the facility.
Another $2.3 million will be used to help plan and design upgrades and expansion at the Queenstown Wastewater Treatment Plant in Queen Anne's County.
