Best Places For Grilled Cheese In Baltimore

For most of us, the idea of a tummy-warming grilled cheese sandwich conjures up thoughts of childhood comfort. Bring back those feelings with a very grown-up spin by trying some of the flavorful cheese-and-bread combinations whipped up by some of the most creative chefs in the Baltimore region. Here are five different venues that have re-imagined the idea of a grilled cheese with extraordinary success.

It doesn't get much more traditional than Ropewalk Tavern. Having survived in this spot since pre-prohibition times, Ropewalk has been serving up the goods for almost a century, including 155 different kinds of beer. One of its best meals, however, has to be its Chesapeake grilled cheese, which consists of broiled colossal lump crab cake, sliced tomatoes and American cheese on grilled sourdough bread; all ingredients to make any Marylander's mouth water.

Cocoaccinos is still a pretty fresh café, both in the sense that it has only been around since 2007 and in the sense that it has an extremely trendy (and kosher) menu. One of its trendiest items is its grilled cheese panini which can be ordered to taste with the options being a very cheap cheddar cheese panini ($4.75), or the slightly more complex cheddar and tomato ($5.60). You can also load it up with combinations like cheddar, feta and avocado; tomato, cheddar and avocado; or cheddar, mozzarella and feta--any of which will cost you a scant $7.50.

A trip to Donna's combines the warm feeling of grandma's kitchen with trendy and scenic patio dining (don't worry, it has cozy indoor dining for the cold months, too). Take Donna's grilled cheese sandwich for instance. It sounds simple enough, right? Well, try it Donna's way, which includes granny smith apples, cheddar cheese and bacon. When you order it from the menu, you also get your choice of soup so you can dip your sandwich.

A renovated stone farmhouse in the middle of Maryland horse country, the Oregon Grille just drips of romance with its classy and cozy interior fine dining and its breezy and classy stone patio venue. It may be surprising, then, that one of the best items you could order from its menu is a good, old fashioned grilled cheese. It's actually a grilled Caprese dandwich made with white bread, buffalo milk mozzarella, oven-roasted tomatoes and a side of mixed greens.

Victoria Gastro Pub is fine dining with a classy wine and beer menu. So it may not be that surprising that it spins a classic like grilled cheese with Maine lobster and brie fondue. Yes, it is exactly as good as it sounds!
