Armed Suspect Surrenders After 6-Hour Standoff In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A tense six-hour standoff between Baltimore Police and an armed suspect has ended after the man surrenders on Saturday night.

WJZ's Amy Yensi has the details.

With their rifles drawn, special operations officers close in on the 2700 block of Baker Street.

"It's kind of scary I mean because police's riding around, truck riding around. I've never seen anything like that around here before," said Wilfred Burrell.

Detectives surround a West Baltimore home after they receive a call of an armed suspect inside.

Police arrived on the scene around 3:30 p.m. and were met by a woman who stated that she was assaulted by a man inside the home who was armed with a gun.

"When officers arrived they were met by an adult female who told officers she had just been assaulted inside of her house by a man. The suspect in the house who assaulted her was also reported to be armed during the incident," said Det. Jeremy Silbert, Baltimore Police.

A man who does not want to show his face tells WJZ he thinks the suspect is his father.

"I know my father he has bone disease he's not with all that physical stuff. All I know is I'm calling my father's phone and he's not answering," said the man.

Neighbors are asked to stay inside their homes while detectives and a bullet proof truck circle the perimeter. Those trying to get back into their homes had to wait in the distance as the situation unfolded.

"I was on my way to work and they stopped me here and told me I couldn't go any further," said April Lee.

The standoff ended peacefully after the 55-year-old suspect surrendered to police.

Police also activated their reverse 911 system during Saturday's incident, which allows them to call home within a certain geographic area to keep everyone informed.
