1 dead, 1 wounded in shooting near Cross Street Market in Baltimore's Federal Hill

Federal Hill grapples with back to back violent crimes this week, including fatal shooting

The Federal Hill neighborhood is on edge after back-to-back violent crimes this week.

One man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Thursday night near Cross Street Market in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood, according to police.

Officers were called to the 1100 block of Marshall Street for a report of a shooting just before 10 p.m.

Two men, a 37-year-old and a 35-year-old, were found suffering from gunshot wounds, according to police.

Both men were rushed to the hospital, where the 37-year-old died, police said. The men have not been identified at this point in the investigation. The condition of the 35-year-old man is not known.

There have been no arrests, and there's no word yet on a motive for the shooting, police said.

"It's sad and it's unfortunate that this continues to happen so close to home, and it's imperative that something is done about the violence in the community," said Wanda Simms, a local resident.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call police at 410-396-2100 or call the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

"It does scare me..."

"That same street – cross street – at like 6 o'clock this guy got held up at gun point, someone tried to rob him…so it's happening more and more, I guess," Ethan Cantrell, another local, told WJZ.

On Wednesday evening, Baltimore police responded to an attempted armed robbery on East Cross Street and arrested a 20-year-old man named Andre Frye.

"It does scare me a little bit, but it kind of makes me more aware of my surroundings when I come down," Simms said.

Neighbors in Federal Hill say they love where they live, but recent crimes are concerning.

"I'm going to be a little mindful next time I go out, maybe not stay out as late…maybe not drink as much,"  Cantrell added.

Crime in Federal Hill

According to data from the Baltimore Police Department, this was the first homicide reported in Federal Hill this year.

According to WJZ's Gun Violence Tracker, the neighborhood has seen a 33% reduction in gun violence compared to last year.

In August, Baltimore police bolstered their presence in the Federal Hill area after launching an Entertainment District Unit to improve safety in some neighborhoods. It came as Federal Hill residents raised concerns about increasing vandalism.

Despite Thursday's double shooting, Baltimore has continued to report a historic decline in violent crime across the city.

Data from the mayor's office shows a 31% drop in homicides and a 22% drop in non-fatal shootings between this and last October.
