Baltimore Police Announce Series Of Arrests In Shootings, Homicides

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Major crime bust. Homicides in Baltimore are higher this year compared to last. Monday, city police announced arrests in several shootings and homicides.

Derek Valcourt has the latest.

Baltimore police say they've solved three murders and closed six non-fatal shooting cases over the weekend. They say they now know a 13-year-old stabbed a 15-year-old to death in an argument over a cell phone---one of many cases police say they solved this weekend.

Sixty-two-year-old Larry Dixon Sr. was charged with a Friday murder at a home on West Caton Avenue. The arriving officer says he found Dixon admitting he shot his own nephew, 50-year-old Keith Glasgow with a shotgun.

Police also arrested Devon Vennie and Keyon Jackson for shooting and killing a man Thursday night and then leading Sgt. Hillary Davis on a high speed chase before their capture.

"They attempted to park a car and just sort of walk away but didn't realize, I guess, that the helicopter was right above them," Davis said.

Those cases bring to 149 the number of murders in the city so far this year---an increase from the same time last year, when police were dealing with 104 murders. Police say so far this year, they've cleared less than 40% of those cases.

Another case closed this weekend is when a 13-year-old was arrested for the murder of a 15-year-old in an argument over a cell phone. Police say their crucial tip came from one of the teen's family members.

"We did talk to a bunch of children in the area at the time, but if it wasn't for that concerned family member, we probably would not have known what had taken place on that particular case," said Major Stanley Brandford.

The number of non-fatal shootings in the city so far this year is nearly double what they were this time last year. Still, police say they were able to solve six of those cases over the weekend.

Police say for those six non-fatal shootings they solved this weekend, they've already made three arrests and issued three arrest warrants.

Police are unable to provide more details on the stabbing of that 15-year-old since the suspect is a juvenile.
