Baltimore Org. Dedicated To Preserving History, Provides Unique Cruise

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Project Liberty Ship, which is a Baltimore-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the last remaining troop transport from WWII  as a living memorial, is providing visitors with an opportunity to tour it and go on a cruise.

WJZ's Mike Schuh reports, the organization is a rare link to the past and needs your help.

The S.S. John W. Brown is one of the only two remaining, fully operational Liberty ships that participated in World War II, and the cruise is in celebration of the war's 70th anniversary.

But it takes a lot to keep this machine going.

"The ship has to meet Coast Guard standards in order to operate safety. And it's an old ship and there's always things that have to be done to maintain it," said Brian Hope, Captain, Project Liberty Ship.

There's so much maintenance and it's so expensive to keep her ready to sail.

A fundraising cruise will be held on October 3rd.

Those wishing to purchase tickets must do so at least 14 days before its departure.
