Baltimore Librarian Nominated By Obama As Librarian Of Congress

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Baltimore librarian has been nominated by President Obama as the 14th Librarian of Congress.

Carla Hayden is currently the CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, a position she's held since 1993.

In a post on Facebook, Obama said, "Michelle and I have known Carla since her days working at the Chicago Public Library, and her dedication to learning and education is unparalleled."

Last year during the unrest in Baltimore, Hayden kept the doors of the library open as a "beacon of the community," he said.

Her co-workers say they couldn't be more proud of her.

"It's really exciting for all of us who work here. We known she will be fantastic, she will bring energy and new life to the institution," said Deborah Taylor.

Before coming to Baltimore, Dr. Hayden was Deputy Commissioner and Chief Librarian of the Chicago Public Library, where she met the Obama's.

"Her understanding of the pivotal role that emerging technologies play in libraries will be essential in leading the Library of Congress as it continues to modernize its infrastructure and promote open access and full participation in today's digital world," Obama added. 

Hayden will be first woman and first African-American to hold this position in its 214-year history.

"We think it's a good reflection of what the Pratt Library does for the City of Baltimore too, so the president is recognizing the work that is done here in Baltimore, so Dr. Hayden could be the next Librarian of Congress," said Roswell Encina.

It's now up to the Senate to confirm Dr. Hayden's nomination.
