Baltimore Landfill Workers Accused Of Theft, Taking Bribes
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Five Baltimore public works employees have been accused of taking bribes and stealing scrap metal at city landfills.
The Baltimore Sun reports 55-year-old William Nemec and 54-year-old Tamara Washington, both landfill employees, were charged in U.S. District Court after a two-year investigation prompted FBI raids Tuesday.
According to court records, investigators say the pair took bribes and allowed commercial haulers to use the facility without paying fees.
Employees Jarrod Hazelton, Michael Bennett and Charles Bolden are accused of collecting and selling scrap metal from the dump.
The FBI had been monitoring Hazelton's and Bennett's phones for about two years.
A spokesman for the Department of Public Works could not immediately be reached for comment.
The city's waste management system generates revenue by collecting and selling recyclable scrap metal.
