Baltimore Kids Trade In Toy Guns At 'Peace Camp' Halloween Party

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore kids traded in their plastic guns for other types of toys at St. Frances Academy Community Center Saturday night.

It was part of the By Peaceful Means 10th anniversary Halloween party, which also included games and a peace-themed costume contest.

About 300 children attended, according to organizer Ralph Moore.

The center will re-purpose the toy guns into a peace-promoting mosaic.

According to our media partners at The Baltimore Sun, the art will honor Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy shot and killed by Cleveland police in 2014 while playing with a toy gun at a community center.

Baltimore has also had issues with kids carrying replica guns on city streets.

In April, police shot a 13-year-old boy who was brandishing what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol. It turned out to be a replica gun.

The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
