Baltimore County To Ban Housing Discrimination Against Vets

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore County Council is poised to pass a law that would make it illegal for housing providers to discriminate against military veterans.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Councilman Todd Crandell's idea is supported by all six of his colleagues and is virtually guaranteed to pass. The council is expected to vote on the bill Monday evening.

The county currently prohibits housing discrimination based on things like sex, age, marital status and sexual orientation.

Crandell's measure would also allow housing providers to give preference to veterans and their families. He said the goal is to create apartment complexes or housing subdivisions specifically for veterans, which is currently not allowed.

A similar measure was killed by state lawmakers in the General Assembly.
