Baltimore Co. Students Win $10K In BGE's Video Challenge

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A group of Baltimore County students plugged in their thinking caps and beat out more than two dozen other schools in the 4th annual BGE Wires Down Video Challenge.

The goal of the contest is to spark creativity in the classroom, encourage safety at home and help make learning about electricity and electric safety fun for their students.

As WJZ's Amy Yensi reports, in addition to a prize the students walk away with a valuable lesson.

Students at Krieger Schechter Day School beat out the competition with their video and warning for kids of all ages.

"To make this video happen, we had to put in a lot of work, a lot of our time. It was a lot of fun to do it though, so it definitely paid off," said David Netzer, 4th grade student.

During a safety demonstration, students learn theirs is the winning clip for BGE's contest.

The 4th graders at this year's winning school opted for a game-show theme.

The annual video challenge is inspired by the gas and electric company's original catchy commercial and song.

The goal: to educate children about the dangers of downed power lines.

"We use this as a hook to get them interested in electrical safety and it gives us an opportunity to engage with those children," said Steve Woerner, President & Chief Operating Officer at Baltimore Gas & Electric.

As part of this year's competition, 27 local elementary schools made their own commercials for a chance to win up to $10,000 for their school.

"I used to think wires were pretty cool and I'd like to touch them. Now I can't because they're dangerous," said Sarah Wilcox, 4th grade student.

The winning video will actually air on WJZ this Saturday and Sunday as a PSA.

The  Krieger Schechter Day Schools has big plans for the prize money--including two playgrounds and science tools.
