2 Marylanders In Brussels When Attacks Occurred

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As the world comes to grips with the devastating terror attacks in Belgium, many U.S. citizens are also feeling the impact.

Ava-joye Burnett speaks with two Marylanders who were in Brussels when the attacks occurred.

They both live in Baltimore County. One of those travelers was able to get a flight out of Europe, but the other--a Johns Hopkins employee--is still stuck in Belgium.

Janel Johnson was doing what tourists do--snapping photos while visiting her niece. But just days later--tragedy in Belgium.

"My niece wakes me up and it was like, 'Oh, they bombed the airport.' I'm like, 'What?' And 20 minutes later, it's the metro. And I'm like, 'What is going on?'" said Johnson.

Now Johnson is stuck--her flight canceled twice.

Johnson says not only does she want to come back home to catch up on work at Johns Hopkins, but she also wants to see her 14-year-old daughter.

There are other Americans who were able to make it out of Belgium.

Brian Stanley, a martial arts instructor from Reisterstown, says he was in the airport when the bomb went off. Two days later, he got a flight out through Amsterdam.

"So many people letting me know that they cared and wanting to know if I was OK, and to come home--yeah, that's what got me through it," said Stanley.

Friday, we learned at least two Americans are among the dead.

But there are stories of survival--like Mormon missionary Mason Wells. He was in the airport when a bomb went off.

"We were really close. I feel lucky to escape with what I did," said Wells.

As for Johnson, she's booked for a flight home on Monday, but she hopes that one doesn't get canceled, too.

"It was shocking because I didn't think in this place, that would actually occur," she said.

Along with the two Americans confirmed dead, the State Department also says there are other Americans still unaccounted for.
