Audit: Police Cruiser Dash Cams Broken

PALMER PARK, Md. (AP) -- A Prince George's County internal audit has found that about 30 percent of their police cruiser dashboard cameras are broken.

The department planned Thursday to release details of the audit, which will show most of the problems stem from a particular camera model the county adopted in 2004 that has become obsolete.

The department says it will ensure that a majority of the broken cameras are replaced or fixed by the end of the year.

The audit was launched in April, weeks after Officer Brennan Rabain died in a crash. As investigators tried to determine how Rabain lost control of his vehicle, they found that the cruiser's dashboard camera was broken.

Capt. William Alexander, a commander in the department's internal affairs division, says 1,048 marked cruisers have the devices.
