Assateague Island National Seashore Featured On Stamp

BERLIN, Md. (AP) -- The Assateague Island National Seashore has been selected as one of the 16 national park images to be commemorated on a series of stamps.

Local news outlets report that the U.S. Postal Service is commemorating the National Park Service's 100th anniversary by featuring 16 natural or cultural treasures on the Centennial Forever Stamp Series.

Officials from the U.S. Postal Service visited Assateague Island Thursday for a ceremony to reveal the stamp's image, which features two of Assateague's wild horses grazing in the island's marshes at sunset. The image was photographed by Tim Fitzharris.

Park Superintendent Deborah Darden says the image creates a "wonderful feeling about the national parks."

Assateague has been part of the National Park Service since 1965.
