Army Navy: Friends Or Enemies?
BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- The Army Navy game on Saturday is one of the greatest rivalries in college football. In just hours the game kicks off downtown.
Christie Ileto reports on the love hate relationship between the two academies.
"I love the tradition," midshipman Ensign Soon Kwan said. "That's the most fun part of the experience... not just the game, but the whole week leading up to it."
In less than 24 hours, midshipmen and cadets face off at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for the 115th Army Navy game.
"364 days out of the year, we're the greatest combined team in the world, but when it comes to tomorrow, during the game, we are the greatest enemies," Austin Welch who attends West Point said.
On the eve of the game, there's an array of patriotic sports that are played testing student's agility and endurance. It looks competitive, but really it's friendly.
WJZ asked Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, if he has any predictions for Saturday's game.
"Sure, absolutely Navy big," Mabus said. "Nobody's keeping track, but I believe it's 12 years in a row."
Both teams will spend 60 minutes competing to win, but the game is bigger than bragging rights. It's about camaraderie.
"These guys have all signed up for the same thing, whether Army, Navy, Marine Corps, it doesn't matter... they're going off to defend our country," Mabus said. "One day a year, we're on different sides, but the rest of the time one team, one fight."
After the final whistle, the uniforms look different, but they're all on the same team.
