AP Source: Edwards To Seek Maryland Senate Seat

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Democratic congressional aide says Rep. Donna Edwards has informed House leadership that she plans to run for the Maryland Senate seat left open by longtime Sen. Barbara Mikulski's retirement.

Edwards, who has strong support among progressives, would face at least one other announced Democratic candidate, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a more centrist figure. Edwards' entry would set off an energetic primary for the seat.

Maryland leans Democratic and the winner of the primary would have an advantage in the general election.

The Washington Post reported Edwards' entry and said she would be announcing Tuesday. An official with Edwards declined to comment.

The congressional aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to publicly discuss Edwards' plans ahead of the announcement.
