Annapolis Man Killed After Getting Out Of Car On US Route 50

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland man who got out of his car on US Route 50 in Annapolis was hit and killed by another car.

Maryland State Police say 43-year-old Jeffrey Kaplan of Annapolis lost control of his car and hit a center median early Wednesday morning.

Police say Kaplan then got out of his car and was standing beside it in the travel portion of the roadway when an SUV being driven by a 30-year-old Hyattsville man hit him.

Kaplan was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's unclear why Kaplan lost control of his car, but safety officials had warned of icy roadways. State police also say the area where Kaplan was hit doesn't have overhead lights.

The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours during the investigation.
