More Than 2,000 People Attend Amazon's Baltimore Job Fair

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Fifty thousand jobs waiting to be filled.

Today, retailer giant Amazon rolled out the welcome mat to thousands of applicants across the country, including here in Baltimore.

The company says they need all those extra workers to keep up with customer demand.

In Baltimore, more than 1,200 jobs are up for grabs. More than 2,000 people showed up to put their best foot forward.

Inside the Baltimore fulfillment center, which is the size of 28 football fields, it takes a huge team to keep the products moving along 14 miles of conveyor belts.

"We're looking for leaders, we're looking for people who enjoy serving customers and we're looking for people who want good jobs," company spokesperson Laura Lynch told WJZ.

Braving the melting Maryland sun Wednesday, thousands of prospects hoped to showcase that they have what it takes to be an Amazon team member.

It was the first ever Amazon Jobs Day, and similar job fairs were held around the country. Nationwide, Amazon is looking to fill 50,000 jobs to keep up with demand at its 70 fulfillment centers.

"It sounds like a great opportunity to make some extra money and look for a better career," said Peter Hayman. "When I went on tour everything is nice and neat, it's beautiful, the people was friendly."

"Maybe if we have great success here, we'll continue doing more," Lynch said of the job fair.

The company says it is also hiring for its new fulfillment center in Cecil County that is set to open this fall.
