Babysitter 'Hailed A Hero' After Helping To Rescue Children From Burning Baltimore Home; 3 Children Hospitalized
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A babysitter is being hailed a hero after she helped firefighters rescue three children from a burning Baltimore home overnight Sunday.
Three children, two Baltimore City Police officers and four other adults were injured after a fire broke out around 1 a.m. Sunday morning in the 5100 block of Plainfield Ave.
Baltimore City Fire Chief Roman Clark said fire units arrived on the scene in the northeast part of the city to find heavy flames coming from the home and several people were hanging from the side windows.
"The smoke was really like, coming from the windows so you could see it." said neighbor Taykonya Cheeks.
Calvin Bethea said his nephew and two cousins wouldn't have made it out alive if not for their babysitter, who the children were staying with at the time.
"She threw the kids out the window to save them and she put her own life on the line, she's a hero," Bethea said.
Two boys rescued from the home are in critical but stable condition, while a third child is in stable condition and being held for observation.
All four of the adults and the two Baltimore City Police officers have been treated and released.
The two officers were injured while assisting to rescue the people from the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
