Juvenile charged in shooting death of 8-year-old girl near Towson

8-year-old girl dies after being shot near Towson, juvenile charged, police say

TOWSON, Md. -- An 8-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital Wednesday night after she was found shot inside the basement of a home in the Idlewylde community.

Authorities have now charged a juvenile in connection with the incident. They are not naming that juvenile suspect or providing further details.

The young victim died at the hospital, and the violence left many in this community shaken.

"It's crazy how someone so young lost their life. It's very crazy and tragic. I'm just very speechless. Someone so young lost their life. She didn't even have a chance to do things like go to college," said neighbor Jeremiah Jackson. "If it was something intentional, I kind of feel unsafe because I wouldn't want anything to happen to my nieces and nephews like that. I just hope it was an accident and not something intentional."

The incident unfolded just across the city-county line where The Alameda turns into Sherwood Road.

Law enforcement sources told WJZ the shooting was between a brother and a sister but cautioned that detectives are still working to piece together how and why the tragedy happened.

Police declined interview requests Thursday but previously said there was no threat to the community and the shooting is an isolated incident.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski told WJZ in a statement, "Any incident of gun violence is tragic and even more so when it leads to the death of a child. All of Baltimore County grieves with the family who lost a child last night. The police department is actively investigating this incident, and more details will be shared when appropriate."

Family members gathered outside the home Thursday morning but asked that the media leave, and a woman who identified herself as the 8-year-old's aunt declined an interview request.
