6 Million Gallons Lost In Water Main Break In Md.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a water main break on a busy Hyattsville street caused the loss of 6 million gallons and covered the suburban road during the afternoon rush hour.

Prince George's County Police say the break was reported about 3:30 p.m. Thursday on Rhode Island Avenue at Crittenden Street.

Photos and videos showed brown water gushing onto the street, which had buckled.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said the break in the 12-inch main was contained about 7 p.m. The commission said Rhode Island Avenue will remain closed during Friday morning's rush hour while repairs are made to the 73-year-old pipe.
