5 Fort Meade Homes Evacuated After Mortar Round Is Found

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- Army officials say five homes at Fort Meade were evacuated briefly after a World War II-era mortar round was found during construction work.

It happened about noon Thursday. Fort Meade spokeswoman Mary Doyle tells The Capital of Annapolis that workers removing dirt from a construction site found the round, which is similar to an empty shell casing.

A 330-yard area was cordoned off and residents left their homes. An ordnance team removed the device, and residents were allowed back into their homes around 2 p.m.

Doyle says ordnance is routinely found around the post.
